European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
