Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.

The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report early analysis show the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in association with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the public for details.

A high-ranking official stated the vandalism left him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
